175The aliens don’t sit idly by as X-CoM works towards saving the world. They have their own missions that they’re trying to do and they’ll react to your successes to some degree as well as generally change their tactics as time goes on. Whether it’s beginning to search for your bases, changing which aliens man most of the missions or switching out the types of vessels they generally use, the game gets more difficult as time progresses. Though you start on the back foot, with enough successes and focused research you can quickly level the playing field. The hyperwave decoder is one of the most important things for that, allowing you to see exactly what the aliens are doing and best counter it. Stopping most of their missions leads to high scores with the council which gives you more money, allowing you to better take on the aliens.
The steady escalation of what the aliens throw at you works to counter your gains in technology and soldier skill as the aliens don’t ever advance so to speak. You do start seeing more of the more powerful equipment and stronger aliens as time goes on but they never move from their elerium based weaponry or the UFOs we’ve already seen. By the same token, X-COM cannot advance become the same technology level, though they can turn what they learn from the aliens towards interesting things that they didn’t think of at first. This is good as X-COM needs every tiny advantage they can get.
