Here's my Let's Try of the Pre-Alpha Demo of Eagle Island, a 2D action platformer roguelite in development by Pixelnicks. This title will be coming to Windows, Mac, and Linux around Mid to Late 2018.

My apologies for the keyboard noises. I had the same setup as my previous LP and LT videos. But for some reason, my mic picked up my keyboard a lot louder during this one. I had done a previous LT on this title, but I decided to scrap it as I got too ranty at the boss.

In this title, you take on the role of a boy named Quill, who's exploring titular mysterious island with one of his pet owls named Koji. Their objective is to travel through nine distinct areas of this island, in order to find and confront the gargantuan deity, Armaura, in a desperate attempt to rescue Koji's sister, Ichiro, from her clutches.

As expected, most of the procedurally generated areas have enemies to defeat, and upgrades and treasures to collect. To defend himself, Quill has the ability to fling Koji in eight different directions. Most enemies in the demo will die in one hit. Killing foes consecutively in a fast enough time frame will create a combo, granting more gold seeds and gems. These gems are necessary for using the three elemental feathers. Specifically, fire, ice, and wind. Each of them has their own characteristics and is useful in particular scenarios. Though, the ice feather didn't get much time to shine here in the demo due to a lack of durable enemies. However, to use them, you need gems, which only drop from treasure chests, eagle statues, or enemy kill combos.

The 16-bit "retro" aesthetics are wonderful to look at it. The island feels alive, with appropriate flora and fauna. These graphics are well-done, and distinguishable.

My only real complaint with this game is the boss encounter. Due to Quill having only 3 HP, the boss being unpredictable at times, and the stage difficulty proceeding the encounter to be not that challenging, the boss can be quite the wake up call. I feel like the stage doesn't properly prepare you for the boss battle. Now, I don't mind the fights on Challenge mode. But on normal, I take issue - especially as if you lose, you need to replay an entire new level again. I suppose this will be ironed in the final game with persistent upgrades.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this game. It's fun exploring this island, obtaining upgrades, and stringing together combos. The physics are tight and there's a lot of room for pro plays and speedrunning. The Kickstarter for this game was successfully funded. So, we can hopefully look forward to the game coming out in the future.
