Let's Try: Vagante
1Disclosure: I was given a key for this game by Dare Drop, on the premise that I play it and try and complete dares.
During my playtime with it, chat commented/joked that Vagante is "legally distinct Spelunky" which is both very accurate, and also not. Like Spelunky, you go cave-diving, you fight baddies, there's a 'damsel' you can save, the shop keepers can and will murder you if you cross them, the environments are magically generated, and it's super easy to get dead.
Where the game differs (in my experience) is that there's equipment (that can have magical properties), character stats, and a levelling mechanic which I did not discover until way too late into my playthrough. Oh, and every level seems to have a boss, which is both interesting and brutal.
I dig the style, the music is great, the combat and movement is really fluid. I have no idea about our character's motivation, or if there's much of a plot but honestly? I don't know if that really matters much. It's still a lot of fun.
