I found a way to get the Life Cast medal without Leif's Icicle ability. The key is a trick I call the hopfly. To do it, hold B for a moment to initiate Vi's flight, then press A to jump before the flight actually starts. If you time it right, you'll hear the jump sound effect just before Vi starts flying. This trick lets you hop up a short distance before flying, so you can fly higher.

To get Life Cast, first lure the Ironnail as close as he will go to the twig against the northern wall. Freeze him, then switch to Vi and stand on top of the twig. Hopfly to the top of the frozen Ironnail, then hopfly again to the platform with the Belostoss. From there, complete the room normally.

I only just discovered the hopfly while trying to get this medal. I wonder whether it has any other uses.

Update: As I suspected, the hopfly is already known. It can be used e.g. in the room where you gain the flight ability to fly from the pencil to the bottom of the ruler, skipping most of the Forsaken Lands. Here's a Steam topic that mentions the glitch:
