Linux Mint 20.1 is based on the rock-solid Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Linux kernel 5.4. It will be supported until 2025 and comes with an all-new unified filesystem layout. For the desktop environments, Xfce is at version 4.14, MATE is at 1.24, and Cinnamon is 4.6.
What's particularly cool about Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" is a new Web App manager that can turn any website into an "app" that you can pin to a panel for fast access. And no, it doesn't just launch as a tab in your web browser. The developers explain, "When a Web App runs it behaves like a desktop application. It has its own window and its own icon." Very nice.
Linux Mint 20.1 "Ulyssa" comes with an all-new IPTV player called "Hypnotix." It is a bit controversial that it is included with the operating system -- especially as developer resources may be spread thin -- but OK, I suppose it is still cool to have. It can be used to watch both live television and video on demand.
Here’s the highlight of other enhancements that Linux Mint 20.1 includes:
✪ Cinnamon 4.8, MATE 1.24, and Xfce 4.14 desktop
✪ Official Chromium package to Linux Mint repositories
✪ Support for Favorites and a section for it in the file manager
✪ Printing and Scanning improvements by removing ippusbxd driver
✪ Upgraded HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) driver to version 3.20.11
✪ Filter by rating ability in Pix, an image viewer and browser
✪ Enabled hardware video acceleration by default in Celluloid
✪ Unified filesystem layout.
✺ ADDITIONAL INFO ✺
The Linux Mint team has announced the release of Linux Mint 20.1, a long-term support release which will continue to receive updates until 2025. The project's newest version features a new web apps manager which will assist users in setting up websites to act more like native applications. The project is also including the Hypnotix IPTV application and the ability to mark files as favourites for quick access. "Time and time again we need to access the same files. Up until Linux Mint 20.1 we would remember where they were stored and slowly get to them using the file manager, bookmark their containing folder to get to them faster, look in the recently opened document section, hoping to find them in there, clutter our desktop with direct links... Well, there's a much better way now! If you're working on a file and you know you access it often, right-click it and select 'Add to Favorites'. You'll see a little star pop up in your panel. That's where all favorite files are, just one click away. You'll also find them in your application menu.
