Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa: postpone the release of the final version
The release of Linux Mint 20.1 has been postponed to the final version which cannot be released in time for the holidays. 75 bugs fixed since the beta version and 34 more in the works. No date scheduled for now. Some problems of the base Ubuntu 20.04.1 on kernel 5.4 are not of quick solution.
Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa in final version will not arrive in time for the end of the holiday season . This was stated by the head of the Linux Mint project in the usual post earlier this month on the progress of activities. He thanks the donors who in recent months have made it possible to give bonuses to programmers and moderators, very useful especially in the period of the end of the year.
75 bugs found by the Linux Mint 20.1 beta distribution have already been fixed and there are 34 more open . Not all of them disabling but the team prefers to wait to face them and fix them before rolling out a stable version.
This is a big difference in strategy compared to that of Canonical, which is the head of the Ubuntu project and of which Linux Mint takes the basis for the 3 most popular versions (there is also the pure Debian one, which does without Ubuntu, LMDE ). But it is also true that Canonical does an immense job of adapting the applications, which are then also available for Mint, with the selected kernel version.
Linux Mint works smaller and never goes out of balance on release dates. Which in part also depend on the study done on the most recent and stable Ubuntu base. In short, Linux Mint does not come out on a precise date precisely planned months before: it is released when it is considered ready.
“ I know we have been asked a few times but we can't give you an exact release date. It's not that we don't want to communicate it, it's just that we don't know when the release will take place “.
Clement Lefebvre thus justifies the delay of Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa compared to the indicative roadmap. And he takes advantage of it for a clarification on the modus operandi of the team when it comes to releasing a stable version.
" As a project, if we wanted to announce a release date and stick to it, we would have to do careful planning, be ready to have programmers work day and night even if there is no real urgent need or worse release the product with major bugs that we could have. resolve if we had more time .
I know some companies and some projects work this way and that's okay. I know that the visibility they give to their user base is important and also appreciated, but this is not the way we operate. The release will come out when we are satisfied with it.
Looking at the list of bugs we face, there are still problems we intend to fix. In the span of 2 months it will not matter if we released the new version a week before or one after, but the bugs we leave behind, especially those involving the live session, would mark the release forever with evident effects in the version that people then download for the next 6 months “.
This does not mean disregard for the times. the physiological release cycle every 6 months, however, confers a rhythm and a sense of urgency. The team is in fact totally focused on the release of a stable and best version of Linux Mint 20.1 in the final version.
Moreover, some "regressions" (bugs emerging from previously stable packages), inherited from the Ubuntu kernel base also used by Linux Mint, are not easy or quick to solve. The team does not intend to change the kernel base between the beta ( already released ) and the final version. Nor to switch to the 5.8 kernel for which there is not yet adequate hardware support.
There are known issues in touchpad operation and involving the AMD Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 platform with the 5.4 kernel.
The team is considering packaging a dedicated ISO image as part of the 5.8 kernel-based release.
