Adding to the open-source Christmas excitement this year was the release of GIMP 2.99.4 that puts this image editor one step closer to the long-awaited GIMP 3.0.

GIMP 3.0 has been long sought for finally transitioning this open-source image manipulation program from the GTK2 to GTK3 toolkit even while GTK 4.0 was released this month. With GIMP 2.99.4 there are usability fixes, a new paint select tool, multi-threaded JPEG2000 decoding support, and initial documentation for how to port existing GIMP plug-ins to the 3.0 code-base. There are also various usability improvements, better device defaults, and more.

GIMP image editor 2.99.4 was released a few days ago as the second development release for the next major GIMP 3.0.

Release highlights include:

Usability fixes across various parts of GIMP
New Paint Select tool in the playground
New generic dialog generation and metadata support API for export plug-ins
Multi-threaded JPEG2000 decoding
Initial documentation on porting plug-ins to 3.0

:: More Info ::

GIMP 2.99.4 was released with fixes and new tools.

The GIMP, or GNU Image Manipulation Program, is an image editor expandable through plugins and distributed free of charge to be used in tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image creation.

GIMP is an image editor quite popular in the Linux world and perhaps the best alternative to Adobe Photoshop, because, after so many years of development, it has achieved great acceptance by the community.

With that, he was able to position himself in one of the image editing applications that can be found in almost all repositories of Linux distributions.

In addition, this editor works on several operating systems, and is translated into many languages.

But even though it has many features, Gimp can be used as a simple painting program, a quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image processor or even as an image format converter, in addition to several other tasks.

Now, those responsible for GIMP development have announced the release of GIMP 2.99.4, which is a new development version of GIMP 3.0.

Gimp 3.0 will come with a lot of new features, of which you have a summary below those lines, but personally what they mention in the “what's to come” section catches my attention, specifically that they will not adopt GTK 4.0 from the start .

We remind you that the new version of GTK has been available for just over a week, but the GIMP development team is now focused on other things, and in addition, GTK 3.0 will still have more than enough support to make the change safe.

What's new in GIMP 2.99.4

What you have below is a very short list of what they published:
Usability fixes in various parts of GIMP.
New paint selection tool on the playground.
New generation of generic dialog and metadata support API for export plug-ins.
JPEG2000 multithreaded decoding.
Initial documentation on the migration of the plugin to 3.0.
Fixes in: Sliding widget, multilayer selector, input device dialog, enhanced standard devices, and the thumbnails have been adapted for Korean and Japanese.
New experimental ink selection tool.
APIs have been updated: Generation of dialogs for plug-ins, support for generic metadata, updated file plugins, multi-threaded configurations available in the plug-ins, improved plug-in debugging, babl 0.1.84 and GEGL 0.4.28.
It is understood that the project is focused on what they already have in hand, and that GIMP 3.0 will be moved to GTK 4.0 in some future update.

Anyway, there are two updates starting this week: the new one for macOS and the latest beta version, precisely the one that will not reach Apple devices.

And speaking of Apple computers, GIMP 2.10.22 does not officially support Big Sur, but it works.
