Live from Khartoum in Sudan on Saturday, April 22, a week after heavy clashes began between the army and paramilitary forces. The number of civilian casualties has risen to 243 since the beginning of the latest conflict, with 1,335 injured, according to the Doctors’ Syndicate.
55 hospitals are reportedly out of action due to the fighting. A power struggle between the army, led by Sudan’s de facto ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) forces of deputy leader General 'Hemedti’ Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo, has been ongoing in recent years.
A military council has run the country since a coup in 2021, although tensions have risen between the two leaders over the country’s direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule. The council of generals took over from a joint military-civilian government, which ousted President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
