A memorial garden to remember those who died on Flanders Fields in the First World War is to be built in London.

It will honour the fallen soldiers from seven Guards regiments, and will use soil brought from every cemetery in Flanders where Guardsmen are buried.

If plans are approved the memorial will be built next to the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks.

Its garden will be built using soil brought from every cemetery in Flanders in which Guardsmen of the war lie buried.

At the moment the memorial site is a rather sad looking pond which is costing hundreds of pounds a year to maintain. But it will be a raised garden with a circular wall engraved with lines from the poem "In Flanders Fields".

The memorial will cost around £600,000. Around half of that money still needs to be raised. The Flemish government has pledged to donate one pound for every pound given by the public.

It is hoped the memorial can be built and finished in time to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war.
