Sonic 2 is, as of 2022, 30 years old!
Sonic 2 isn’t my favorite Sonic game (that would go to 3 & Knuckles and Mania), but it’s the game that the rest of the series would pattern itself after…for a few years anyway. It gave us Tails, the Spin Dash, and Eggman’s Death Egg which would reappear in a few other games. The two acts per zone structure and better balance of speed and platforming also gave the game a much better pacing than Sonic 1.
It isn’t perfect; the special stages are trial and error and there’s some iffy level design in the second half of the game—that can be chalked up to the rushed development cycle where several zones like Hidden Palace and Sand Shower were cut.
Hidden Palace, the most famous of the cut zones, would be finished up by Taxman and Stealth and reimplemented in their 2013 mobile port as a secret level, and several other cut zones were supposedly revisited for 3 & Knuckles.
