Whoa, this is one of the best licensed shmups I've ever played! Not sure how accurate the game is to the source material, but I know playing this game is a good time. I love it... Stage 7 not withstanding.
I can't explain you anything about Macross except for some reason the game literally greets you with a severed tuna head, but I at least can explain how the game works. You can shoot and bomb... this is... the Toaplan formula, isn't it? Yeah, NMK seems to be a fan of this. You're given a heck-load of bombs and you can change your mech's form! ...which is nothing but shot type change... That's disappointing. But hey, it works.
As it had been told the game was made with beginners in mind. While I do believe in that statement, the damn game is still difficult to 1-ALL! I'd say this is as difficult as DonPachi for a very different reason. It will be explained in the commentary.
The game does give you extends and a lot of them, actually. It's based on the total amount of medals and Minmays collected. Then the Stage 5 rival will give you an extend when you finish him off. But this is a game where it's easy to get hit due to blending bullets in the midst of bright explosions and patterns that are too much to no-bomb, so keep your bomb ready!
The awesome thing about this game is if you survive long enough the game will give you the Armor shot. Well... the shot itself is just the middle-of-the-road version of all of the available shot types, but when you get hit in this form you won't lose life. This is your Shield! You'll need it since this game is not easy!
This game is fun and intense. It's not too difficult until Stage 4. Certainly a must play regardless if you're a fan of Macross or not!
