Greetings, everybody.

Today we’re testing the demo for The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, which just got released on Steam. The full game is coming out in a couple weeks, so I wasn’t expecting a demo, and this really pleased me, as a big fan of the Trails series.

My current PC specs are the following:

-CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (stock settings) with Coolermaster Hyper 212 Black RGB.
-Mobo: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC.
-GPU: Inno3D Twin X2 GTX 1070 (stock) and WHQL driver 442.50.
-RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT (2x8GB) CL16 DDR4@3200 Mhz.
-Storage: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB NVMe (O.S. & game), Samsung 750 EVO 500 GB.
-Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2.
-PSU: Corsair RMx 650W 80+ Gold.
-O.S: Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
-Monitor: AOC AGON AG251FG 1080p-240Hz.

As mentioned, I’m kind of a big fan of the Trails series, albeit a bit recent if anything (I got into the games like maybe 4 years ago, more or less), but they instantly grew on me since the very first game in the Sky series. The characters, the setting, the world building, mysteries, politics and some of the most memorable secondary NPCs even, too. The best part is not just those, anyway, it’s the fact that unlike other big JRPG franchises like Final Fantasy, the Trails series are always quite consistent with their big meta story shared among all of the games, even though some of the games in the series can be considered very decent “starting points”, like Sky FC or Cold Steel I, but overall “it’s all connected” as a term it’s an understatement here, every single detail is there if you pay attention, and playing all of the games really pays off.

Of course, a couple of the games (and among my favorites no less) aren’t available in English by official means (only fan translations); these are of course the Crossbell saga games, the first one (Zero no Kiseki) can be purchased from a Japanese digital store, but the second one (Ao no Kiseki, or Trails to Azure in English) is not possible, AFAIK. So that leaves us western fans with a conundrum here…wait for an eventual western release and translation on top of that, or just do some “Google-fu” and you know…find the stuff and play it. These games deserve to be purchased though, if you’re a fan or good RPGs, these are the good stuff, period.

Anyway, for this TOCS3 demo, it’s obvious it was going to be good, as it’s been ported by Durante and his team at PH3, a recently open company that specializes in high quality PC ports. Durante is no stranger to the Kiseki series, as he did quite the heavy lifting on the previous two games for the PC and the end result was fantastic, they’re very well polished on a technical level, some of the best console to PC ports you’ll ever see, no doubt.

This demo is packed with the same features as the previous Cold Steel games, a very nice Launcher where we can adjust many graphical and performance settings, including stuff like PCSS Shadow Filtering, unlimited draw distances and Transparency AA, among others.

The port comes from a PS4 title this time around, not PS3/Vita like Cold Steel I&II, and that means it can be quite a bit more demanding, GPU wise especially, mostly when every single PC exclusive setting is maxxed out and at very high resolutions. Don’t get fooled by the art style, this game packs a punch if we crank all the stuff up, but it’s also very decently optimized and it provides presets for lower end systems (even “portable” devices, as did the previous games).

So yeah, all in all really pleased and surprised by this demo, I wasn’t expecting it, I’m already at max hype levels this month with the imminent landing of DOOM Eternal, then Cold Steel III too soon after, then Resident Evil 3…ah man, it’s too much :P

Also did I mention that the music in the Trails games is…simply god tier? No other way to describe it. But talking about the music by itself would require hours and hours, for sure, I literally have tracks from all the Trails games engraved into my brain and won’t leave, ever.

Some useful timestamps:

- Intro & Launcher settings (graphics stuffs etc.): 00:00
- Other in game settings: 05:27
- Portable Settings Preset: 07:21
- Console preset (sound is a bit louder at the end, sorry): 13:04
- High: 15:16
- Maximum settings: 17:33
- Some combat (Ultra settings): 19:31
- Absurd Shadow Quality (very performance intensive): 22:08
- 1440p DSR Downsampling: 23:37
- 4K DSR: 25:25

As usual, I hope this can be useful to any of you, and I’ll see you next time : )
