Magical Tetris Challenge (Game Boy Color) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Capcom's 2000 Disney-themed puzzle game for the Nintendo Game Boy Color, Magical Tetris Challenge.
This video is of the Quest mode played through on the normal level as Mickey.
Though it shares its name with the N64 and PlayStation games, the Game Boy Color version of Magical Tetris Challenge is quite a different game. Though it still stars the likenesses of many Disney favorites, it features a few new game modes. The most notable of these new modes is the Quest mode.
The quest mode is a "coin rally" that gives the game an RPG-lite feel. You get a card that has spots to place numbered coins, and you win these coins by beating others at Tetris matches or by fulfilling certain conditions within the park. Disney NPCs can give you hints about where to find certain coins, and each of them can be battled, though not everyone has the coins you might specifically need. Paying attention to the clues is key in figuring out what you need to do to fill the card and win the game.
Each of the characters you battle have their own styles and strategies to challenge you with, and these do a nice job of changing up the standard Tetris formula. Though the goals aren't always clear straight-away (would it have really been that hard to include a quick tutorial for things like Signal Tetris?), they all provide unique challenges (once you've figured them out) that keep the game fun and fresh feeling. And just like the console versions, this game doesn't hesitate to test your skills. Regardless of what the title and the Disney license might imply, Magical Tetris Attack is not an easy, kiddie game.
Since it's a Capcom production, you know to expect first-class graphics and sounds, and it doesn't disappoint. The visuals are all surprisingly vibrant and well detailed for such a small screen. and the bloopy tunes suit the cheery tone of the game to a T.
Overall, it does have the legs to give a lot of hours of classic Tetris-fun wrapped up in an appealing cartoon theme. If you like Tetris, you'll have a lot of fun with this.
