[MAME] Retro Arcade 16 Bits Classic Edition Mini TV Game Console 145 Classic Games (MegaDrive boot)
Today's awful product is this Chinese 'Mega Drive multigame in an Arcade Joystick' unit. Here are some reasons it's awful (use Show More below to see full list of opinions)
1) Despite being released sometime around 2018 at the earliest, it contains badly hacked ROM dumps that originate in the mid-late 1990s, sometimes with trainers!
2) .. Except for Street Fighter 2, which is even worse as it's the butchered version found in the more recent MSI units (and the unit form factor is identical to said MSI unit oddly enough)
3) Revenge of Shinobi is missing entirely, launching it will give you a duplicate of Thunder Force 2. Wacky Worlds is swapped with Fun and Games
4) 1 Player only, no way to connect a 2nd pad / stick
5) Non-existent QA. The unit this was dumped from had a broken Flash ROM from factory, meaning several games are entirely corrupt data (so it will be marked as NOT WORKING in MAME for now)
6) The MD hardware clone isn't great. The sound is off and it doesn't handle sprite limits so Sonic's title screen is broken on real hardware. It also seems to have a confusing region setup, it needs to report US region for some games, but some sticks run at PAL speeds. (the emulation makes things look better than they really are here as MAME is treating it as standard MD hardware)
I've seen some positive reviews of this unit on YouTube, but I'm honestly not sure why, sure the physical build quality is a bit better than some units, but that's meaningless when the software / hardware clone is bad, and without 2 players many of these can't be fully enjoyed anyway.
