Management consulting interviews are one of the toughest interviews to crack. You have to compete against some of the best professionals and experts around the world for coveted roles in big management consulting firms. If you’re wondering how to crack consulting interviews then you’re at the right place. In this video, I’ve made a complete guide for you on how to prepare for consulting interviews and also how to crack them.
I’ve personally interviewed a lot of candidates for McKinsey. And I’m using my personal experience to guide you through the process of cracking management consulting interviews. Management consulting interview prep involves a lot of work on your CV and your past experience. Consulting case interviews can be a lot easier to solve if you have the right mindset and approach toward questions. Consulting interview questions are designed to check your aptitude as well as your thought process. Consulting interview prep requires systematic planning and an approach that will help you confidently face questions and give appropriate answers.
I discussed the format of consulting interviews at the beginning of the video. A typical consulting interview lasts for about 40-45 mins. You’re going to get resume-based questions, your personal experience-based questions, and finally case-based questions in the interview. To tackle resume-based questions you need a framework of why, what, and how. The interviewer will go through every point on your resume and ask you specific questions about those points. The challenges you faced and how you resolved them will give a structure to your answer. You should spend 20-30 mins about every point on your resume.
The second set of interview questions will be personal experience-based questions. You can get these questions from the Bain website page itself. These questions will be designed to know more about your personal experience. These questions will be pretty straightforward. Your soft skills, leadership, and entrepreneurial activity will be tested through these questions. To get ahead here you should use the STAR format. Star format means Situation, Task, Action, and Resolution. Spend most of your time on the Action part. At least have 6-7 stories about these.
The third set of questions will be about business cases. You’ll be given a hypothetical business situation and it will be analyzed how you reach that business problem and try to solve it. Without understanding business, you cannot solve these problems. Start reading about different businesses. This will help you answer case interview questions. You can check the articles on the Bain and McKinsey websites to see what their thinking is right now and what their thoughts are. Combine the factors into buckets and has to be an organically led approach. Everyday spend 30-40 mins preparing for this.
