Anto RetroGamer Presents: the opening title screen and intro theme to Mario is Missing! Nintendo Entertainment System version (1993). Developed by published by The Software Toolworks (Radical Entertainment for PAL releases), Mario Is Missing! is one of several educational games using the Super Mario brand. The game would be released around the same time for the Super Nintendo, and boasts better graphics with slight differences to the gameplay and presentation. A point-and-click version would also be made available for MS-DOS.

Mario Is Missing! would also be the first game to feature Luigi as the main protagonist in a Mario game. Who essentially looks like Mario in green attire. Otherwise known as 'Green Mario'. Shame Luigi couldn't at least get his name in the title...

Mario Is Missing! follows a somewhat different, but otherwise simplistic story. Bowser has escaped into the real world (Earth), and has set up his headquarters in a castle on the Antarctic. His goal is to steal all of Earth's greatest treasures to buy hairdryers to melt the Antarctic (really!). Before doing this, Mario gets captured by the Koopas to prevent him from foiling their plan. It's up to perennial sidekick Luigi (and Yoshi) to save Mario and the world.

Mario Is Missing! is based around educational content, and the goal to saving Mario, is to travel around the world. Using the P.O.R.T.A.L.S system, Luigi will have to travel to across all the continents, from New York City to Beijing. Along the way, Luigi has to figure out which location he is in, and find several treasures in a condensed area. To do this, Luigi has to stomp on several Koopas in the area to retrieve them, and return them to the correct information centre. A number of trivial questions must also be answered to complete each individual treasure.

Mario's sidekick Yoshi also plays an important role in Mario Is Missing! After identifying your present location, Yoshi must be summoned there so it can help Luigi reach the information booths (seriously!) in each location, as well as helping Luigi get back toe Bowser's castle after each area is cleared. This will have to be done every time, as Luigi has to warp to each location. Yoshi has apparently little trouble walking through different continents and swimming through large oceans...

Mario Is Missing! - like other related education games - gets a bad rap from the community in general. However, the combined sales of the NES and SNES version of the game exceeded $7 million for 1993. A simplistic game perhaps compared to the main series, Mario Is Missing! was always meant for a very young demographic. A curious game, players with a greater knowledge of Geography will no doubt breeze through this. Perhaps a greater challenge can be found in it's sister game: Mario's Time Machine...
