This is a sequel, kind of, to a Game Boy game titled Donkey Kong, which is itself a kind of sequel to Donkey Kong, the Arcade game. I see this as a tribute to the earlier games of both series in general. Mario is up against Donkey Kong, but for different reasons than the 1981 Arcade game (this time, he did not kidnap anyone, but he stole Mario toys). There are even barrels and fights against Donkey Kong in which he throws barrels and rocks at you and other fights where you throw barrels at Donkey Kong. You can grab things, including enemies, in a manner very similar to the North American Super Mario Bros. 2. The way Mario moves and jumps is the same as in Super Mario 64. While similar in gameplay to the previous game for the GBC, it features updated graphics (the characters have that 3D look and there are colors compared to the original GB release as well as far more colors than on the Super Game Boy, obviously). Both games are great and are an original twist on the Donkey Kong concept.
