Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes - Dreamcast - Intro & 1CC Playthrough as Ryu & Wolverine
Full one credit clear gameplay, longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide and trueplay of the arcade mode form the SEGA Dreamcast home port of Marvel vs. Capcom. Warning the game has lots of flashing images from the start. Released on the CPS-2 arcade hardware in 1998, Capcom really were at the peak of their fighting genre design and gameplay when this released in arcades at 1998. However by this point the arcade market was very oversaturated with 2D fighting games in the 90s and the decline was clearly starting to occur.
Which might explain why here in the UK the arcade was a very rare beast to find, certainly outside of London. Marvel vs. Capcom was both a step forward for the series in terms of graphics and a step back at the same time. The roster was far smaller than both X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter. While the Capcom side had some great new characters including Captain Commando, Mega Man and Strider Hiryu. The only truly new character for the Marvel side was Venon and you also had a lazy respray of Iron Man's Spite from Marvel Super Heroes with a few altered moves to make War Machine.
While the game had some superb new backgrounds that were far better looking and more lively than the previous two games in fact they put Marvel vs. Capcom 2 bland 3D artwork to shame as well. Gameplay wise the series took a step back with some changes, in an attempt to remove assist spamming. You were now given a random assist character with a set number of uses. The trouble is these characters hugely changed between one another with some being vastly better than others. The amount of uses for each one widely changes between the different characters and pending which partner you got, could put you at a major advantage or disadvantage. Which might explain why Capcom dropped it for the future games and just went back to the old system. As you could at least damage the player who was called in originally.
Other changes include the rather odd Ryu move set that allowed him to swap to Ken's and Gouki / Akuma moves with the use of a super. This was another strange choice as they could have just left Ken and Akuma in the game instead of mucking around with Ryu. On the plus side the new duo team attack function was great if very overpowered. The new boss Onslaught was great and proved much more of a challenge than
All in all it was a bit of a mixed bag, still the Dreamcast port allowed you to unlock all the hidden characters and included a mode where you could play as the final boss Onslaught. It's a great game, but one not quite as good as those that came before it or the game that came after it. The less said about the 3rd instalment and Infinite the better.
