Clockwork Aquario - PlayStation 4 - Gameplay showcase & intro, plus two player mini-game [4K]
Clockwork Aquario is an unreleased SEGA System 18 arcade game developed by Westone behind the Wonder Boy & Monster World series. The game was set to released in 1994 and be published by SEGA, however it got cancelled to the changing arcade scene, partly the game seems to have been caught in a slow development circle and work started on it in 1991.
Clockwork Aquario went under the working title Ghost Hunter, which you can still seen in the background of the score board. It is an old school 2D arcade platformer and a visual lovely game with huge 2D sprites and some of the best graphics seen on the SEGA System 18 and some catchy music to go with it. Gameplay wise it's a platformer that seems to mix elements of Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) and crossed with a bit of Rainbow Island and Parasol Stars. There a hint of the Wonder Boy series too here with the character design of Huck Londo, Elle Moon and Gush.
Each character also feels and plays differently to one another. Gush being the biggest and having a larger punch attack and a weaker jump, Elle has the best jump, but the smallest attack and Huck sits in between the two. The gameplay is very well balanced with bright and bold characters and some huge boss sprites. Two player mode also changes the game up with players able to throw one another and steal gems for a life up, it also adds in a versus mini-game at the end of every stage, but bewared Gush players have a huge advantage in it compared to Elle and Huck.
It's a huge shame it never released, but the hardware it released on at the time was getting quite outdated for 1994. when you look at games like X-Men Childen of the Atom and Gun Force II released in 1994 on top of titles like Daytona USA. It had some very tough competition despite being a truly superb games. Thanks to United Games Entertainment, Ryuichi Nishizawa, Steve Snake and many more this game is finally available to play on PlayStation and Nintendo switch!
