Mega Man X5【ZERO】 No Damage Run ~ Virus Stage 1 (XTREME)
Mega Man X5 (Zero) PSX, No Damage challenge/speedrun of Virus Stage 1 (Shadow Devil) on Xtreme Mode. In this playthrough, I achieve the MMH/MEH rank in the end.
I have the Mega Man X5 Improvement patch applied, which I mainly used to shut Alia up. You can download the patch here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3711/
More details: In this no damage run, I'm not using Zero's SDC (Saber Dash Cancel) and instead am using other cancel techniques, such as crouch and jump cancels. It's very similar to SDC, just that it requires more finger work with the D-pad and is more technical than SDC. If you want to learn more about the techniques I use during this run, watch this video: https://youtu.be/rfPZxWnpSbs
Stage Overview:
Well... nothing much to say here. This is literally just Quick Man's stage from MM2, just with way more mobility options, so this isn't even difficult. Folks that claim this simply don't try to utilize pattern memorization (or too lazy to use their heads, rather), which was the same issue with MM2's force beams that everyone loves to exaggerate over. That's all both stages are: memorization. Once you know where each laser is (which is not hard to do, seriously), you're going a very linear and repetitive path towards the boss door. Just be lucky they didn't decide to go the braindead route and throw enemies in-between the force beams. Now that would've been stupid. I consider this even easier than Quick Man because hey, YOU CAN DASH, LMAO.
Shadow Devil Overview:
Again, memorization up the wazoo. Though I don't really blame people much for this one, for the pattern(s) isn't very recognizable until after you suffer against this thing for a while. Basically, the Shadow Devil shuffles through three regular patterns on the norm. Explaining each orb that moves during the three patterns is pointless, so just pay attention to which parts move, then take a mental note. You can usually tell which pattern it is from the first row that flies towards you. Once you've figured out how the orbs move, then move onto the next pattern it gives you (if it's different), and then do the same for the third pattern. When he gets to about half HP, Shadow Devil will attempt to confuse you by trapping you between two rows on each side. This has two patterns as well, and you should handle them the same as the regular three pattern. But if you want an easy mode solution that doesn't involve cheating with the wall climb exploit, just simply use C-Flasher (AKA Rekkouha) for Zero and you'll be golden.
When it opens it's eye, this is where damage can be either high or low for you. His eye does open up in a pattern, though I've yet to actually figure it out. I think X MaverickHunter figured the pattern out (and in his own runs, he took advantage of that), so if you want to take a chance at asking him (which I don't think he'll respond to comments on older videos of his), feel free. I have his channel link on my Featured Channels list on my own channel page. But yeah, point is, if you know where the eye will come from, you can start pre-emptive strikes with C-Sword and you can get in about a maximum of six hits. Since I'm not familiar with the eye pattern, I was comfortable with just getting in 4 hits per pass, then bolting. Doing it this way CAN hurt your chance at MMH at the end (since it adds time to your clear time result), but since I did well enough in Virus Stage 2 to make up for the GA derank I got here, it evened out when I got to X.
But yeah, this boss is all about memorization and pattern recognition. Just remain calm and pay attention to it's every move. Of course it's going to be trial and error: it's Mega Man, after all.
Number of attempts to No Damage this stage: 13
