31Metal Gear stands out among my NES library of old games. Its focus on stealth, survival and adventure really put it ahead of its time, when most popular games focused on action and platforming jumping. The idea that players were encouraged to avoid confrontation was intriguing, and the massive scope of this NES game makes it worth exploring.
Despite frustrating controls, repetitive graphics, dirty tricks and much backtracking, Metal Gear really offers a unique experience for the NES console. It’s a real adventure game. And there are enough items and weapons to find scattered throughout the map that it keeps players interested in finding the next cache.
I was too young and too impatient to enjoy Metal Gear when it came out, but revisiting this game as a grownup (sorta,) I really have an appreciation for what Konami was trying to do. And even though the port from the MSX2 to an NES game didn’t turn out as well as it could have, it still has a ghetto-licious place in my heart and in my retro games collection.
