Micro Machines - Gamecube - Intro, bronze cup playthrough and bomb tag mode [UHD 4K60]
Not to be confused with the Codemasters series also based on the same toy line, this was Infogrames attempt to take over the franchise and it seems there may have been some license skulduggery going on in the background of this one. That allowed Infogrames (renamed Atari) to release a game base on the series, handle by Infogrames Sheffield House studio it's pretty much a copy and paste of the Codemasters series, just not quite as good and with the added feature of a balding middle aged bloke turning up in half the stages. Who is totally unneeded and likely the result of some developer joke we will never know about.
It's a solid enough game, plays well and captures the spirit of Micro Machines, it just doesn't quite get it right and the misfits cast of characters aren't as good as the one seen in the Codemasters series. There is also the problem that it just isn't as good as Micro Machines V3 on the PlayStation 1, which upped the ante on the previous games in the series hugely with fantastic presentation and gameplay.
The game was only released in PAL on Gamecube, along with both the GBA and Xbox versions. Only the PlayStation 2 version made it to North America and it seems the game also performed poorly sales wise as the studio was shutdown in 2003. Some members of the team would later form Sumo Digital and Codemasters got the rights back and released Micro Machines V4 in 2006. One point worth noting is the shift in games to more adult title during this era may well have gone against Micro Machines as it does feel very much like a 1990s game and not a 2000s one. Fun enough, but just lacks the spark that made the Codemasters games so much fun to play.
