Astérix & Obélix XXL - Gamecube - Intro & first stage gameplay [UHD 4K50]
The first game in the Astérix XXL franchise was only released in Europe on Gamecube and it's a fairly average third person adventure game mixed in with a scrolling beat'em up. There's some nice ideas in this one, but the game is overly long and way too repetitive with a real lack of variate in the enemy troops and far too many boxes to break.
That said the game sticks to the core of the Astérix series concepts and has its moments, the sequels certainly expand on the gameplay. As the name suggests you get to play as the classic French comic book characters Astérix & Obélix written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. The aim of the game is to beat up the invading Romans lead by Julius Caesar. This time around Caesar has captured most of the gauls from the village and it's up to Astérix, Obélix and Dogmatix to get them back.
Certainly not the best Astérix game made or the worse, it falls into the middle ground and just isn't as good as the Konami arcade game or the Sega Master System titles by Sega. A much needed two player mode is sorely missing. Graphics are decent for the characters, who reflect the art of Uderzo well, world art and design is somewhat bland, one game that may have benefited from cell shading. Note the game is PAL optimised and resolution cropping occurs if forced in 480p, so this is the game running at 576p.
