Microsoft & Riot Games New MMO Project Cloud Based Rumors Facts and Info
Microsoft and Riot Games looks to be throwing some weight into Mainframe for heavy development of an upcoming MMO based on cloud technology that has some major implications for MMORPG fans, today I want to take a look at the rumors the facts and the info we have on this upcoming MMO
There is an interesting rumor that Microsoft may be bouncing into the MMORPG game space soon. There is an interesting rumor that their Xbox department may be working with the developer Mainframe on a cloud based MMO that scales using cloud technology. There is a ton to unpack here and with all the moves Microsoft has been making lately mixed with the overall success of New World from Amazon, it does sound like a very high possibility. We are going to be looking at this rumor, where it came from, why it holds some weight and what it all means for the MMO genre in general.
So to understand this rumor let's first look at who Mainframe is: A Finnish Studio that has secured 8.3 million in funding so far for a cloud-based MMO and some of that funding came from RIOT GAMES. They are speaking of PC and console with as they put it, no legacy to constrain them. Now it's worth mentioning before I continue that all of this funding was NOT crowd funded, which means these investors had to see something that made them think this project was worth throwing money at.
Let's take a look at why it is cloud based and what they say about it, “There are so many different aspects of being cloud-native that we can benefit from,” Gunnarsson said. “The player population and simultaneous player counts is one benefit. But we see other aspects of being able to develop for a single runtime targeted in the cloud, giving us the potential to access faster, greater storage for the game, allowing us to basically create a much more vibrant and detailed world.”
This also means it can be streamed from many different devices without as much limitations to the actual hardware it is using.
Other interesting information regarding this upcoming title is that they are using the Unreal Engine, it is in pre-production an dthey have been working on it for roughly 18 months. And from the small amount of information we have right now it appears to be they are making a AAA MMO that focuses on it being a social sandbox type MMORPG.
So we are looking at a cross platform new MMO running completely on cloud technology making it possible to even run on popular consoles such as the Nintendo Switch if they want without the restrictions of graphics cards and all of that.
Now I am skeptical about streaming games because in the past the loss of frames, the slight input lag even if only a handful of milliseconds, it can be felt. However, I am smart enough to know that this probably is the future of video gaming once the tech reaches the right point.
The rumor itself comes from GamesRadar and although it is a rumor at this point that Microsoft is getting involved, it makes a lot of sense for many reasons: They have their own cloud based tech known as CloudX and with the recent success of Amazon's New World, I reported that I believed it would cause a wave of other large publishers getting excited about new MMO projects. And it is NOT a rumor that Mainframe is making a cloud-based MMO and the funding amount is also NOT a rumor and is in fact, well, a fact.
Now we are years away from anything manifesting that is something to get REALLY excited about but nonetheless the information is pretty exciting for MMO genre fans. They claim that because it is Cloud-native that there are gameplay mechanics that can ONLY work in a game that exists on a remote server. Mentioned by VentureBeat is that mechanics can scale in terms of complexity. So for example, since it's cloud based, it would be easy to implement crafting on your phone while at work or on break. Or perhaps some resource farming. While coming home to your PC or console would be better for questing or raids since they would need more input and a more complicated control mechanism.
And if Microsoft starts getting involved in MMOs, it opens up possibilities for them to become a publisher for smaller indie projects AND once again, it opens up larger studios to begin new projects to keep this genre ticking along!
