Midnight Resistance Arcade Playthrough & Intro, Evercade Version Capture
Longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide and full gameplay of the classic 1989 Data East Arcade game Midnight Resistance a follow up to their 1987 game Heavy Barrel, with gameplay elements clearly being inspired by Contra and Super Contra as well. Midnight Resistance really is an excellent entry into the run and gun genre, some may argue it is also the closest game to a third Contra arcade title as well.
In the arcade the game used a special rotational stick to control the angle of the gun and the direction you moved your character in. In truth Midnight Resistance would have been better to control if it had used two joysticks per player, it's a great run and gun title and one that sadly doesn't get as much respect as it should. Likely down to the lack of home port for the game, the original control system made it hard to adapt to a single joystick back in the day and the Mega Drive had an odd mix of systems to pick from. Even today emulated versions of the arcade are rare on console, which sadly means many players have never played this Data East classic.
For a 1989 title Midnight Resistance featured lots of full screen sprite, as you would expect for a run and gun the game throws lots of enemies at you. In fact it's a big range of different characters and machines, most enemies are unique and the stage design is forever shifting. Some of the most interesting moment include facing off against a huge battleship, ridding up into the tree tops as you face the saw machine and rescuing your family if you have enough keys.
It's a really well balanced game, but there is a bit of luck with the weapons at the end of the stage, as it's a bit random what drops you can get. I got really bad luck this run at the final boss, not get any ammo and the same two backpack weapons. Should have taken Nitro, but it wouldn't have helped much, previous run I beat him without losing a life. Still great game in one or two players.
So this is the game running on Evercade, if you don't know what an Evercade is it's a retro system developed in the United Kingdom using open source emulation. So this device is running MAME for want of a better word. It plays well with the default control the L1 and R1 buttons are used to rotate your weapon. On the down side for this game there is an emulation issue with the sound with it having some odd background white noise with the emulation of this one which isn't ideal. It's also not clear what version of MAME the evercade is using, I would hope it would be one of the recent release from at least 2023 or 2024 at the earliest.
