Steam Heart's - SEGA Saturn - Arcade mode playthrough & Score Attack (Real hardware)
With the news that this Saturn title is getting the tribute treatment in 2025 time for a gameplay longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide to show you the full game! A console port of the PC-9800 shmup (STG) game, which in turn in more like a remake or remaster due to the huge graphics and gameplay update for it, which includes redesigned boss ships. As with most of our videos this is captured on real Sega Saturn hardware and original game disc.
Warning the game features a red and blue flashing effect during the third bosses orb attack. This will likely be removed in the re-release. As this type of flashing is known to cause epilepsy, in the edit when the attack happens we have removed all colour during the flash so it just fade between black and grey. This will still be listed in the time stamp and if you have any type of photosensitively don't watch this video. A warning is shown in the front card for flashing images.
Now the Saturn version features two gameplay modes in the option menu one with the boring story scenes that slows the pace of the game and feature some visual scenes. Which were edited and turned down from the original PC-98 version. The other being the Arcade mode which cuts out all the story scenes including the ending, so that the game becomes a pure shooting arcade title and reduces in mission load times as well. If like us you just want the shooting action then this is the way to go and this is the version shown in the video. As the chat scenes at the start of each mission and before the boss and after the boss all get cut, reduced in-game to minor in-game load pauses.
As arcade style shooters go it's actually pretty decent and one of the few titles in the genre on Saturn that didn't start life as an arcade game. While not the best game in the genre it's far from the worst as well. It actually makes for a decent entry point for shooters as the game isn't that hard and the stage selection screen allows you to start from any stage you have unlocked. A feature many of the other titles on the system could have done with. The game also goes a bit crazy with the number of enemies and bullets on screen at certain points which results in slowdown. Likely intended so you can dodge your way out of there.
Featuring eight stage plus a final boss battle the game is a decent length for the genre. You have one life per credit, but can take up to seven damage points before you blow up. However, when you continue you have to replay the whole level from the start. This wasn't a perfect run, died a few times and those deaths have been removed also due to a capture signal loss in stage two, I had to rerecord it. The end of the video show the short caravan stage
Very pricey on the second hand market, it's not clear if the Saturn Tribute version will get an English release, due to the games story.
