Whether for your own amusement or malicious player killing, utilizing the Pitfall Trap concept in Minecraft can be quite fun to achieve. This tutorial will show you how to create a relatively hidden pitfall trap for players in Minecraft 1.4.6 (or whatever the most recent version of Minecraft is at the time of this viewing)
This pitfall trap is designed around a temple/room entrance or corridor, and is ideal for things like adventure maps, pvp servers, and more. I go over the concepts of how to conceal and how to set it up with redstone.
Since the inclusion of tripwire, making pitfall traps are much more fun and satisfying as tripwires are often easy to overlook. A properly setup tripwire trap can be quite amusing.
This tripwire pitfall trap also leads to an arrow-based tripwire death-trap at the bottom of the pit. I could have easily just filled it with lava or maxed it with water, though there was something maniacally satisfying about having a player drop into a pit and being shot with a barrage of arrows. This trap can also be modified so that the arrows shoot at the lower portion of your player. (I can hear the arrow to the knee jokes now)
