My problem came down to incorrect or incomplete Joystick configuration in the Main Menu (core).
Sorg: "Probably your settings of analog sticks (Menu core) are wrong.
Make sure you didn't skip analog X/Y at the end!"

There seems to be a problem with the MiSTer analog joystick controls. I've noticed this with the Atari 5200 and Apple II core.
