MiSTer FPGA - Stunts (4D Driving) [With Wheel & Pedals] / DOS PC-486
It's been over 30 years since I last played this and it holds up surprisingly well! During the course of playing over the past week, I found the game has a tangled web of different versions with various strengths and weaknesses, which I documented below if you want to give it a shot. I also found there are communities still doing regular track time competitions for this in 2023! (Links below) The final track in this video is my submission for ZakStunts' June 2023 competition. ⭐Racing wheel setup:
While this game doesn't support wheels specifically, it can be made to work with them quite well if configured properly.
Version 1.1 Broderbund is the only one suitable for wheel use. 2 Button/2 Sticks mode in AO486 core. T300RS wheel set to 270 Degree range. To enable joystick/wheel mode in-game, press CTRL-J at any time. Be sure to move marker to all boxes otherwise calibration will not complete. Bind Buttons 1&2 to paddles for manual shifting. Gas/Brake are combined to one pedal, but this isn't really a problem here since brake isn't analog. If you have pedals that have the Y axis split, it would work with two pedals.

⭐Version differences I noted for Stunts:
v1.0 Broderbund - Initial release- more bugs & greater likelihood of wrecking from slight collisions than other releases. Huge analog deadzone makes joy/wheel mostly unusable. Controls pretty much like key presses bound to the joystick with the only benefit being analog gas. MT-32 music works correctly. Setup program has additional "PC Speaker (No Digital Effects)" option for sound that's not in other versions.
v1.1 Broderbund - Second release- fixed bugs, relaxed wreck conditions, more graphics options like "fast simulation speed" added. Unknown what "Fast video mgmt." gfx option does. (Maybe quicker replay controls?) Moderate analog deadzone with true analog steering, unlike v1.0 Broderbund. MT-32 driver was changed and is buggy. (Music slows down and halts oddly.) Even when replaced with MT-32 driver from v1.0, still has missing notes in MT-32 soundtrack. Use SoundBlaster option in this one. ❗See comments section❗
v1.1 Mindscape - Last PC release, Euro only "4D Sports: Driving" - Smallest analog deadzone, but introduces jitter when joystick/wheel is centered often times, making control overall worse and the game hard to look at with the jittering. Does not have the new gfx options from v1.1 Broderbund release. MT-32 driver seems to be working as well as v1.0 Broderbund release.
Overall I'd recommend sticking with the v1.1 Broderbund release, even with its MT-32 issues. There are only short music tracks for the intro, title and post-race screens so it's not a big loss here.
In all versions, SHIFT+F1 while in the track editor unlocks hidden landscape pieces!
⭐Playing with MT-32 Music:
Use MT-32 v2/New. Distorted/incorrect sounds on MT-32 v1/Old. Stunts v1.1 Broderbund has a bugged MT-32 driver. Some issues can be fixed by replacing the 'MT15.DRV' file with the same file from other versions, though it'll still have missing samples/notes unfortunately.
MUNT/mt32-pi seem to have an issue with a high pitched tone that plays when the game launches. All versions effected. Confirmed this does not occur with original MT-32 hardware.
The AO486 core was brought to MiSTer by Sorg & considerably upgraded/improved by FPGAzumSpass, whom also brought us the PlayStation, GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Gameboy and NES cores. You can support their work on Patreon:
