MiSTer FPGA - Darius Gaiden - 1cc A-B-D-G-K-P-Z' (ダライアス外伝) / Saturn [BETA]
*PLEASE WATCH IN FULLSCREEN @ 1440p!* Darius Gaiden on Saturn is a phenomenal port of this arcade gem. The biggest difference is the way colors were transferred. Everything is overly bright and as a result many stages look completely wrong (stage 1, for example.) I tried to compensate for this with the use of very heavy polynomial gamma correction here. This helps things considerably but still is not accurate to arcade. Saturn BETA core also has a click at the start of CD audio tracks. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? If you've ever played this game in arcades or seen capture footage from an actual PCB, it's pretty easy to tell that something is off with the graphics in this port. Arcade emulators had issues with this as well. The first stage is a great example, and the reference point for how I balanced things because it is so awkward-looking compared to the original arcade version. The pillars are supposed to blend in to the dark background & ground, and give the appearance of flying through an eerie cityscape that is being invaded. With the brightened graphics, the pillars in the back have this distinct grey outline and look like they're detached from the surface instead of achieving this blend. I applied gamma correction until this suitably blended in like the original. The downside of such heavy gamma correction is that many darker shades of color will blend in with each-other, so it is ultimately a destructive process to the image once you go above ~2.5 for most games. I used 2.9 for this one, so it will certainly have this effect, but is still much closer to the arcade's visuals as a result.

The game's built-in 30hz turbofire code was used, since it seems to slow the game down less and also does not rank up the difficulty as quickly.
💥Here's the code for 30hz turbofire: At the Start/Options menu, hold B, then press Y, Right, Left, X, Z, L, R
