MiSTer FPGA - Star Wars: X-Wing [CD-ROM MT-32 VGA] / DOS PC-486
In my follow-up X-wing video, I'm plotting the same course through the "Collector's CD" as a comparison point. Here's my previous video of the disk version: https://youtu.be/fLTXAci1JEY. Which do you prefer?

In this video I fly the X-wing, A-wing and Y-wing starting at mission 4, where the difficulty level spikes dramatically. It's easier in the CD version, as are most missions by default. For those first trying the game, this example will be helpful in getting past a massive choke-point in progression. Quickly prioritize the bombers!
XWJoy v2 for Joystick Throttle Support: https://github.com/pagej97/xwjoy-redux
Unlike the disk version, you can use the updated throttle patch in the CD-ROM version with no issues. This provides full granularity across the entire range of the throttle, as opposed to the 4 settings in the v1 patch. Another benefit here is that it saves the calibration to a file, so you don't need to do that each time you run it unless you switch joysticks.
This video had to be spliced at the beginning of mission 7 due to an enemy ramming me from the side. This is much more infrequent in the CD version vs. the disk original (especially with teammates!), but still happens from time to time.
-CD version benefits:
*Tweaks & bug fixes.
*Easier difficulty.
*Engine upgrade w/ better 3D models & gouraud shading.
*Better SFX, though some are a bit over-used in battle. Feels more like the movies.
*Added voices for mission briefings.
*Red lasers no longer used so targeted enemies are easier to see.
*Smoother joystick control.
*No copy protection.
-CD downgrades:
*Music is much worse. MT-32 option forces General Midi instead. In-flight music especially becomes very grating and repetitive with the poorer instrumentation here. (see my disk-version video description for more info)
*Ship models often show gaps at various angles.
*Some missing SFX & others more annoying. (Cockpit beeps)
Thanks to Lu's Retro Source for this video that helped with joystick configuration in AO486: https://youtu.be/3ZhLDy55CF4
This game uses the iMUSE music system by Michael Land & Peter McConnell first used in Monkey Island 2 that smoothly-blends passages together.
The MT-32 music soundtrack is presented in this video via the excellent mt32-pi project by Dale Whinham: https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi
The AO486 core was brought to MiSTer by Sorg & considerably upgraded/improved by FPGAzumSpass, whom also brought us the PlayStation, GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Gameboy and NES cores. You can support their work on Patreon:
