Mortal Kombat 3 featured new players, new special moves, new finishing moves and new multi-height levels. The most drastic features were the inclusion of a "run" button, and the new combo system. These features had the largest affect on gameplay when compared to the previous two versions. Gameplay was now sped up as the players could run and initial a multiple hit combo very quickly. Another feature that was new to Mortal Kombat 3 that Midway's marketing really pushed was the combination code system. It was a row of 6 boxes on the bottom of the versus screen. The left player had control over the left three boxes and the right player had control over the right three boxes. Pressing the action buttons would cycle through certain icons. Special combinations would unlock secret modes, characters and abilities. Besides all of this, the development team spent a great deal of time increasing the depth of the Mortal Kombat story.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is the second collection of classic arcade games published by Midway for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. This compilation includes 20 games that were not in the 2003 release of Midway Arcade Treasures or the 2005 release of Midway Arcade Treasures 3.

The game plays similar on all three consoles; however, the Xbox version has the exclusive ability to upload scores to an online scoreboard. The special features on each version of the game are the same. These include game histories, developer interviews, and other documents.
