My Arcade DigDug Micro Player Retro Arcade

I was in a store buying something else with a gift card and I had a little left on the card to use up. These were on sale (normally $39.99 CDN, on sale for $29.99) so I picked one up. I wouldn't normally buy one of these, especially at the full price of $39.99 but as a fun little novelty these can be neat. I do wish this one looked more like a real arcade machine. The proportions are strange and the screen is 4:3 non-vertical orientation. I assume it runs an NES ROM as the arcade ROM would be vertical with the score at the top of the screen rather than the side. Otherwise it is very playable. The removable joystick reveals a usable D-Pad and the button response is actually really good. The viewing angle on the screen isn't great but honestly you'll be in front of it at the controls when you're playing and it's decent otherwise all things considered.

The thing with these really is that if you're buying it as a novelty it sits in a strange position. It's very playable but not nice to look at when say just sitting on a shelf. I'd much rather jump up to one of those Numskull quarter sized replicas or over to one of those mini key-chain ones. The key-chain arcades are about the same price as this one and while not nearly as playable they look more like a real arcade machine and do have a vertically orientated screen.

So I can't really recommend buying one of these. Not unless you get a really good deal on one used or on sale or something. Certainly don't pay full retail price for one.
