On January 12, 1797, General Joubert reported an attack at La Corona, north of Rivoli, which failed due to the deep snow. Napoleon received the news and realized that the main Austrian offensive would come via Rivoli. He quickly rode to Rivoli from Verona and issued new orders. Joubert was instructed to hold Rivoli at all costs, while General Sérurier sent reinforcements to Rivoli from the siege lines. Masséna was directed to march his troops to Joubert's left, and Augereau was to delay Provera on the Adige while sending some troops to Rivoli.
Napoleon expected to concentrate a significant force at Rivoli by noon on January 14. The French forces were strategically positioned, with Masséna and Joubert holding the key positions. Alvinczi, the Austrian general, failed to bring additional forces to Rivoli, and Napoleon saw an opportunity to launch a spoiling attack to concentrate Alvinczi's attention.
