On October 8, Napoleon threatened to resign, citing exhaustion and physical limitations. He expressed his belief that Mantua could not be taken before February and raised concerns about Rome's arming and the influence of the Vatican. He demanded the right to sign a final treaty with Naples and sought alliances with Genoa and Piedmont, highlighting the risks involved when he was not at the center of decision-making. Two days later, without prior approval from the Directory, Napoleon signed a comprehensive peace treaty with Naples, allowing the Bourbon dynasty to retain their throne as long as they refrained from acting against the French. This move aimed to secure his southern flank in case of an Austrian invasion from the north. Additionally, Napoleon ensured that his lines of communication ran through Genoa, a more reliable ally, rather than Piedmont, whose newly crowned king, Charles Emmanuel IV, was an unknown factor.

In October 1796, Napoleon faced criticism and rumors in Paris about his ambitions and potential to overthrow the government.
