However, the version that seems to most closely inform the Bloody Mary we know may be that of Mary Worth. Tales place her in both 17th century England and 19th century America, living as an alleged witch using dark magic.

In each account, Mary Worth is accused of exploiting or killing children, leading angry mobs to take violent justice into their own hands. As she perished, whether by burning or hanging, Mary laid a curse promising vengeance upon anyone foolish enough to summon her spirit.
