Navigating Dangerous Collapses While Exploring the Abandoned Devil's Cross Mine
Crawling over dangerous collapses in a 100-year old, abandoned gold mine? No problem! I recently met up with some fellow abandoned mine explorers, and we headed to the abandoned Devil's Cross Mine to get it documented on video before more collapses make it completely inaccessible. Despite a major collapse at the mine's entrance, we were able to dig it out and get in through a tight squeeze. We found ourselves in an impressive, 1200-foot long haulage tunnel with several crosscut tunnels. As we carefully ventured down the main haulage tunnel, we came across three enormous stopes ascending to upper levels. One of these was supposed to be an open stope leading to the outside, but we did not see any daylight high above us. Further in the mine, we had to navigate over another massive collapse, and that led us to a wetter, muddier section of the main haulage tunnel.
The Devil's Cross Mine was a former gold mine that operated from about 1900 to 1922. While gold was its main commodity, small amounts of silver, lead, and copper were also mined here. As mentioned, the mine has enormous workings consisting of large stopes that go up for a hundred feet or more.
