NES Alphanumeric! #055: DARKMAN + Chunkout 2 & Hittorā no Fukkatsu: Toppu Shīkuretto
4I live stream 8-bit Nintendo games on original hardware at least once a week, usually WedNESdays from 10–11 p.m. Eastern, and sometimes play other games on Friday nights (NES, Game Boy, SNES, Wii, etc.) or whenever the mood strikes and I have time.
MINI-REVIEW: I've been trying to decide if this is a horrible game which is poorly designed, or if it's actually kind of okay but just terribly unfair. Can it be both? The presentation is great, with large sprites, detailed and interesting art, bright colors. There are some interesting variations in game play, which are implemented with varying degrees of success, and overall it feels fairly ambitious for a licensed game of a movie that didn't really get much attention. But the game is also extremely punishing and demanding—enough that it's hard to differentiate bugs from features (e.g., slippery controls, bad hitboxes, glitchy platforms). While I got some satisfaction from slowly advancing in the game and learning how to play it, I'm not sure if it's actually any fun. If you love love love the film and are in for a truly "Nintendo hard" challenge, check it out. Otherwise, I don't recommend you play this one for more than 99 minutes.
