Network Adventure Bugsite is a monster collecting RPG for the Game Boy Color released in 2001, hardly known much outside of Japan. There were two versions, alpha and beta with different 'bugs' to collect in each version, similarly to Pokémon. It was developed by the now defunct company Smilesoft (who became The Rocket Company *whistles Team Rocket theme*) and was published by KAZe. Smilesoft, were also the developers of Keitai Denjū Telefang; an original game (which came in Power and Speed versions) which unfortunately got pirated and distributed overseas as Pokémon Diamond and Jade, which were modified, glitchy and poorly translated versions of the original games which couldn't even save without the game freezing.

This title is one of the more original monster collecting RPGs (if you don't take Keitai Denjū Telefang as obscure), though it was only released in Japan and relies a large part on text. Like Keitai Denjū Telefang and Dino Device, there was even some manga released.

Extra information about this game (thanks Kimbles):

The game is set in the future around 2018. The main protagonist, Daichi is sent to an online virtual reality known as Bugsite. Its creation was a joint effort between companies FE, Sting, Ruger, and Tahiro, who also each create different Bugs each. The Bugs are program lifeforms and can be treated like pets, or battled against other Bugs. All of the Bugs are named after tech stuff (there are even Bugs called ZIP and GIF!), with the exception of a few like Spiral (the 'starter' Bug). The people who control Bugs, pit them against other Bugs and maintain the Bugsite are known as "hackers" (seriously). Daichi's father is a member of "the guardian", a group of hackers who police the Bugsite. One day, Daichi's father decides that its about time Daichi got into the Bugsite, so he buys him some equipment to explore it. Earlier in his dreams, Daichi heard an unidentified Bug called "Spiral" calling for help. Daichi manages to find Spiral, and his father is so impressed for discovering an unidentified Bug that he offers Daichi to become a full member of the guardian. Later, he tells Daichi that an evil organization has released a virus into Bugsite which has been causing the Bugs to turn violent, so Daichi starts an adventure to track down the organization and to maintain the Bugsite.
