New Players Are NOT Casual Players
55People tend to conflate new players with casual players, and in this video I'm going to explain why the two are not the same and why you should be careful about whether you're using the word "New", "Casual", or both. The gist of it is that a new player is someone who is new to something, while a casual player is someone who has a more casual mindset/approach to that aforementioned something. Everyone's new to something at one point or another, but not everyone is going to be casual about it. In the case of board games, I am frequently a new player of all sorts of games, but I would definitely consider myself a non-casual player.
It's why it never hurts to be more specific about these things, is someone a new player to a game or are they new to the hobby of tabletop board games? Are they more casual when it comes to playing board games, or are they more hardcore?
Also I randomly talk about Tekken 7, more specifically where the idea for this video came from. TMM, aka TheMainManSwe reacted to Leffen's review of Tekken 7, and I'm pretty sure TMM did the whole thing of combining new and casual. Leffen's take seemed catered towards people who don't casually get into new fighting games and want to learn the ins and outs of a game. So unless these players already have some sort of affinity or fondness already for Tekken, it's gonna be a hard sell for them to really dive into the game.
