One of the best action games on the NES, and it was one of the first games to ever use cutscenes to push the story. Add that to the amazing music, sharp graphics, and difficulty that will make you wanna put your head in an oven* by the final couple of levels, and you've got the recipe for a classic! It's nothing like the arcade game that it's based on, and that's okay! It's much better this way!
*Please note that this statement is in no way an admission that I'm the reincarnation of Sylvia Plath. Just wanted to make sure that was clear. I did, however, briefly consider the option when I was playing this before making the recording, and being killed by the final boss sent me back a bazillion levels.
Tecmo should have included some sort of anger management pamphlet to accompany the bug that set you back so far if you died at the end. I don't really recall any other game penalizing a player quite as harshly as this for a single death. Oh well, that's a big part of what gives this game its deserved reputation for its difficulty level.
I love this game!
Random side note: there was a port of this specific game to the TurboGrafx-16 (well, the PC Engine) released only in Japan. It looks great in still-shots, but the hideous attempts at parallax scrolling and the hugely changed soundtrack (it's a good soundtrack, but it certainly doesn't match this one!) make it a bit of a step down.
