18Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom is a platforming computer game developed and released by Tecmo in 1991. Known in Japan as Ninja Ryūkenden III: Yomi no Hakobune (忍者 龍 剣 伝 III 黄泉 の 方 船). In North America it was published in August 1991 for the NES system. The game has been ported to the Atari Lynx game console. The release for the Atari Lynx platform took place in North America in 1991, in Europe in 1993. The game was also published as part of Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the SNES platform in Japan and North America in 1995. In Japan, the trilogy was released under the title Ninja Ryūkenden Tomoe. The game later appeared in the Virtual Console service for the Wii U platform, the release in North America took place on February 18, 2016, in Europe on November 26, 2015; for 3DS platform in North America on November 28, 2013, in Europe on January 23, 2014.
History - The game takes place between the events of Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos. The plot begins with Irene Lew being chased by a person similar to Ryu Hayabusa and pushing her to the edge of a cliff. Irene, being on the edge of a cliff, stumbles, falls into the water and dies. Irene Liu, a CIA agent, was assigned to Mission Cardinal. Ryu is unfairly accused of murder and begins his investigation from the laboratory that Irene has been researching.
While exploring the lab, Ryu meets a mysterious person. He tells Ryu to go to Castle Rock. To Ryu's questions, the stranger replies that he will receive the details about Irene upon arriving at Castle Rock. At the borders of the territory of the fortress, Ryu meets Foster, who turns out to be a CIA agent and chief of Irene. Foster says that no one has ever been able to pass the fortress defenses. When Ryu asks if Irene was here, Foster replies, "I don't know what you're talking about." In turn, Ryu says that he will not rest until he finds out the truth. On further progress towards the fortress, Ryu meets his clone and finds out that the clone killed Irene. They fight with swords. The doppelganger also says that he has acquired all of Ryu's skills and is not going to kill Ryu, as this is Foster's order.
Ryu continues to move towards Castle Rock and meets a stranger he encountered while exploring the laboratory. The stranger's name is Clancy and he worked with Foster on the Biohazard program. He says that he can no longer work with Foster, and that he created a monster called a bio-noid. When Ryu asked what a bio-noid was, Clancy replied that after the demon died, an interdimensional rift appeared from which unlimited life energy comes. This rift formed on the ruins of the Castle Rock. Foster rebuilt the fortress and experimented with life energy, with the help of which he eventually created creatures - bio-noids. Foster controls them, and Clancy asks Ryu to stop Foster.
When Ryu enters the fortress, he meets Foster and the clone. Foster says he is going to get rid of Ryu, use his body to extract the secret of the Dragon Clan, and create the ultimate bio-noid. However, Irene Liu appears. It turns out that she is alive and, together with the army, opposed Foster's plan. After that, the clone turns into a bio-noid. Irene shoots the bio-noid, but it has no effect. Ryu then fights the bio-noid. After the bio-noid is defeated, Clancy appears from the interdimensional rift. He says that he used Foster, Ryu and Irene to get the fortress back, that the life energy will belong to him and goes back to the rift. Foster tries to follow him, but the energy tears him apart and he dies. Ryu is about to follow Clancy into the rift and Irene wants to go with him. However, Ryu explains that in order to enter the rift, she needs a special kind, otherwise she will face the fate of Foster. Ryu enters the rift alone and encounters a clone. It turns out that inside the rift, the clone was resurrected and turned into a super being. After Ryu defeats the clone, he is teleported to a room where he again meets Clancy, who reveals that the ruins of the fortress are a giant warship. A new world will be created on these ruins, they are the source of new life. The ship takes off and shoots energy weapons into the distance. Irene watches with horror. After that, a hatch in the floor opens and Ryu falls down to the outside of the ship. Ryu sneaks back inside the ship to Clancy, who has turned into a powerful bionoid. Clancy offers to join him, destroy the human race and create a new world, but Ryu refuses and the final battle begins. Clancy evolves twice into more powerful monsters, but Ryu still wins. Ryu then teleports to Irene on the ground, and they both watch as the ancient doom ship falls and explodes.
Castle Rock is also being destroyed. Ryu says that Clancy and Foster's plans are thwarted and that all living things in all worlds cannot be part of anyone's plans. Two stand on top of a cliff and watch the rising sun.
