Paying Nintendo to review their games
The new Nintendo partnership program has come out and guess what? It’s totally horrible.
Much like an Multi Channel Network, Nintendo will be taking 30-40% of your ad revenue ( a number that is subject to change arbitrarily). Unlike with an MCN, you will be getting no benefits for giving them your money!
You can either have your whole channel’s revenue be given to Nintendo, regardless of other content, or apply each video individually for the right to monetize. So you can either give them your money from things they don’t deserve, or you can hold off on giving an independent review of their game for 3 days after you finished it. Essentially depriving the market of unbiased reviews.
I hope you all can see the problem in that a youtuber, who makes money from game criticism and game reviews, would have a problem reviewing a Nintendo game. Not only do you have to essentially pay Nintendo to review their game, you have to review their game by their rules. You’ve signed a contract with them in order to be allowed to review their game. Unless your review is just you standing in front of a camera with ZERO footage of the game, you must obey Nintendo’s rules.
If this is not an “ethics in journalism” problem, then I don’t know what is.
I can understand the argument of no let’s play or walkthroughs, but the way youtube’s claim policy works is that if there is a match there is a match. You must then contest the match and wait a month for it to be declined by Nintendo. Because Nintendo can just do that.
