I'm not convinced my method is the best, but regardless, what you want to do is use the water to put out the fire and protect the village. Put a few explosive trees at the top of the path leading from the water to the village and put a few around the village so they create a dip for the water to move. Keep a good watch and use trees to slow down any fire getting too close to the village.
