NixOS is an independently developed GNU/Linux distribution that aims to improve the state of the art in system configuration management. In NixOS, the entire operating system, including the kernel, applications, system packages and configuration files, are built by the Nix package manager. The distribution's latest release is NixOS 21.05 "Okapi" features significant upgrades to the Linux kernel and GNU Compiler Collection, along with the GNOME, Cinnamon, and KDE Plasma desktops. "Support is planned until the end of December 2021, handing over to 21.11. In addition to numerous new and upgraded packages, this release has the following highlights: Core version changes: gcc: 9.3.0 - 10.3.0; glibc: 2.30 - 2.32; default linux: 5.4 - 5.10, all supported kernels available; mesa: 20.1.7 - 21.0.1; Desktop Environments: GNOME: 3.36 - 3.40, see its release notes; Plasma5: 5.18.5 - 5.21.3; kdeApplications: 20.08.1 - 20.12.3; Cinnamon: 4.6 - 4.8.1; Programming Languages and Frameworks: Python optimizations were disabled again. Builds with optimizations enabled are not reproducible. Optimizations can now be enabled with an option. The linux_latest kernel was updated to the 5.12 series. It currently is not officially supported for use with the ZFS filesystem. If you use ZFS, you should use a different kernel version (either the LTS kernel, or track a specific one)."

:: MORE ::

With more than seven months of work, NixOS 21.05 is nicknamed “Okapi” (also known as forest giraffe) and comes with major component updates, starting with the kernel, as the default kernel has been upgraded from Linux 5.4 LTS to Linux latest long-term support series, Linux 5.10 LTS.
However, NixOS 21.05 also supports the latest and greatest Linux 5.12 kernel, if you install the linux_latest package from the repositories, but the developers of this exclusive Linux distribution do not recommend using it with the ZFS file system.

Another big change in the NixOS 21.05 release is the bold move to the latest GNOME 40 desktop environment.

The main edition, which is recommended for most users, comes with GNOME 40.1 and offers the same layout we can see in other popular distros, namely, with the Activities Overview as the default view.

For KDE fans, NixOS also has a KDE Plasma edition, which has been updated to the latest KDE Plasma 5.21 desktop environment. As expected, this is accompanied by the recently released KDE Gear 21.04 software package as well as KDE Frameworks 5.81.

New services have been added in this release as well, such as the Keycloak identity and access management server that supports OpenID Connect, OAUTH 2.0 and SAML 2.0, Discourse (open source discussion platform), a Web Services Dynamic Discovery host daemon ( services.samba-wsdd.enable) as well as Nebula VPN (services.nebula.networks).

Also, many packages were updated to their latest versions at the time of release. Some of the most notable ones include Kodi 19.1, GNU Radio 3.8, Nextcloud 21, nginx 1.20, Privoxy 3.0.32, PulseAudio 14, PostgreSQL 9.5, Thinkfan 1.2, MariaDB 10.5, xfsprogs 5.11, PowerDNS 4.3 and libreswan 4.4.

This release is supported for the next seven months, until the end of December 2021.

Finally, there are numerous “under the hood” changes in the NixOS 21.05 release regarding incompatibilities with previous versions and other improvements, so to learn more about this version of the distribution, visit the release note .
