"The Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF) is pleased to announce the availability of the Rocky Linux 8.4 release candidate for x86_64 and ARM64 (aarch64). Please note that a release candidate is not suitable for production use. The upgrade from Rocky Linux 8.3 RC1 to Rocky Linux 8.4 RC1 is not supported, meaning it will not be tested nor documented. Major changes: IPsec VPN provided by Libreswan now supports TCP encapsulation and security labels for IKEv2; the scap-security-guide packages have been rebased to version 0.1.54 and OpenSCAP has been rebased to version 1.3.4; these updates provide substantial improvements, including improved memory management; the fapolicyd framework now provides integrity checking, and the RPM plugin now registers any system update that is handled by either the YUM or the RPM package manager.

Rocky Linux is approaching the release of a first stable version of the distribution. Shortly after the publication of the first release candidate of Rocky Linux in version 8.3 RC1, the project was able to publish an RC for the current Point Release 8.4. An update from 8.3 RC1 to 8.4 RC1 is not supported and in this case, too, the current RC1 version is not recommended for use in productive environments.

No further release candidate is planned before the release of version 8.4, therefore all interested users are invited to report possible errors in the project and to work on their elimination.

After Red Hat announced that CentOS 8 was discontinued at the end of this year, Rocky Linux and CloudLinux's AlmaLinux became the two main competitors. Rocky Linux continues to be led by CentOS founder Gregory Kurtzer and others. With Kurtzer's participation, this early stage of the Linux distribution project has provided a lot of weight before any version is released.

common problem

What upgrade paths are supported?

It does not support upgrading between release candidates, nor does it support upgrading from release candidate to stable version. The candidate version is not suitable for use in production and can only be used for testing purposes.

Will there be Rocky Linux 8.4 RC2 before Rocky Linux 8.4 GA?
No, we plan to resolve all reported errors in Rocky Linux 8.4 RC1, and then go directly to the GA version.

Will there be Rocky Linux 8.3 RC2, or Rocky Linux 8.3 GA?

Rocky Linux 8.3 will not have a stable version. The first stable version of Rocky Linux will be 8.4.
