And Cinnamon 5 was released with support for the spice update, and more. Check out what's new in this release and see how to install.
Cinnamon is a graphical environment developed by the Linux Mint community that is a fork of the Gnome Shell, the Nautilus file manager and the Mutter window manager, with the goal of providing the classic Gnome 2 style environment with support for fine interaction elements -successes from Gnome Shell.
Cinnamon is based on Gnome components, but these components are shipped as a periodically synchronized fork that is not externally related to Gnome.
More than six months have passed since the release of Cinnamon 4.8 , and now it's time for a new major version of this lightweight, modern desktop environment developed by the manufacturers and used for the popular Linux Mint distribution, Cinnamon 5.0.
Cinnamon 5 News ::
Cinnamon 5.0 comes with many improvements to make the default Linux Mint desktop environment more stable and reliable, including a memory capping mechanism so it doesn't consume all of your personal computer's RAM.
One of the biggest changes in Cinnamon 5.0 is the addition of new GUI and CLI tools to check, list and update Cinnamon Spices, which includes applets, desklets, extensions and themes.
This means you no longer need to rely on a third-party tool or go to Settings to update your Spices.
According to Clement Lefebvre:
“Cinnamon 5 will ship with a command-line tool called cinnamon-spice-updater, which can list available updates and/or apply them. To make it easier for distributions to integrate Cinnamon spice updates into their Update Manager, a Python 3 module will also be provided.”
The windows list applet received some attention during this cycle, now featuring the ability to track the positions of windows in the list so that you can restore your windows between reboots, but several improvements were also made to the Menu, Network, Sound and Power applets.
Of course, Cinnamon 5.0 includes several other bugfixes and minor changes to support the newer GNU/Linux technologies and perform more efficiently than ever before.
It also improves the scaling effect on unmaximized windows, improves support for Flatpak applications, and removes the keyboard shortcut Alt + Tab Q to close a window.
How to install or update
Cinnamon 5.0 is available for download right now from its GitHub page for Linux OS vendors who want to integrate it into their next major release or just provide their users with the latest update.
That is, for those who are interested in being able to install this new version of the desktop environment, they can do so for now by downloading its source code and compiling it on their system.
It will also be provided as the default desktop environment for the upcoming Linux Mint 20.2 “A” distribution .
