A new version of the anonymizing Tails operating system has been available for download or upgrade since yesterday, Tuesday. Actually, the developers wanted to implement major changes regarding the connection to the Tor network in the stable Tails version 4.19; this project has now been postponed as a precaution. Since the few remaining innovations include updates for Tor Browser and Thunderbird including security fixes, updating is still advisable.
The Linux distribution Tails (“The Amnesic Incognito Live System”) is supposed to help users to navigate the Internet anonymously (if possible), to bypass state censorship and not to leave any traces on computers used. She also brings tools with her to protect sensitive files and digital communication from unauthorized access.
Thunderbird and Tor Browser updated
The Tails developers have upgraded the version of the Thunderbird email client used to 78.10.0 from April 2021. The said release had fixed several security holes, two of which were rated “high”. An earlier Heise security report summarizes details.
The Tor Browser used by default in Tails has been updated to the newly released version 10.0.17. At the time this message appeared, the corresponding release notes were not yet available. Since Tor Browser is usually based on the current Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release), the bug fixes of yesterday’s Firefox ESR 78.11.0 should be on board.
Installation and preview of Tails 4.20
If you are already using Tails from a USB stick, you can perform an automatic upgrade. This still works – depending on the interpretation of the release notes – only from version 4.14 or 4.15: “Automatic upgrades are broken from Tails 4.14 and earlier”, it says there. In the next sentence, however: “Automatic upgrades are available from Tails 4.14 or later to 4.19”.
Tails 4.20 is slated for release on July 13, 2021. The curious will find in the Roadmap for future Tails releases Information about planned innovations. In particular, the upcoming version should include the changes mentioned at the beginning regarding the connection to the Tor network. The developers had already tested this in a beta version and in the first release candidate (rc1) of Tails 4.19 with the community; a few details are about that Beitrag “Call for testing 4.19~rc1” refer to.
An upcoming rc2 announced for the next few days should include further changes and improvements planned for Tails 4.20 regarding Tor.
:: More ::
The Tails project has announced the release of Tails 4.19 with a change that will prevent automatic updates from breaking as happened with Tails 4.14. Unfortunately, the in-built Tor Bridges that were being tested during the beta and release candidate of Tails 4.19 have not made the cut due to the team not feeling confident enough to release that feature today.
To further bolster security, Tails would pin the TLS certificate of the Tails website when performing an automatic update, however, this caused automatic updates to break several times so this feature has been removed. Upgrades are still strongly authenticated as they’re signed by the Tails project using OpenPGP so you should be safe when doing upgrades.
Another small change in this update is the addition of visual feedback when typing the admin password with sudo in the terminal. In the past, you would just type the password and hit enter but now asterisks will show up as you type so you can easily tell if the terminal is receiving the input. This should make Tails easier to use for people who don’t normally use Linux.
