No Rest for the Living | HMP | DSDA-Doom | Long OverDOOMed E6
After Plutonia, the next official id classic Doom release is No Rest for the Living, by Nerve Software, who worked on Resurrection of Evil (Doom 3's expansion) and several console ports of classic Doom. I had no idea what to expect coming in, other than it would probably be more reasonable than Plutonia.
No Rest for the Living takes an interesting approach to its structure, essentially boiling down to "what if we made a Doom-1-sized episode but with Doom 2 weapons and enemies?" (Though this did leave me wondering what I should expect to fight in MAP08...)
The episode encourages exploration by including a secluded automap in levels, to encourage players to figure out how to get it and then use it to go hunting for more secrets. I did pretty well for secrets coverage in this WAD as a result, though ironically the map I fared the worst in was the one with the secret exit (which I had no trouble finding and kind of just left once I did).
Overall I was generally pretty impressed by this and thought it turned out better than I was expecting coming from Final Doom. Legacy of Rust has a tough act to follow...
