43When I first heard this song in-game, I knew that I would have to start writing lyrics for it as soon as I could. Some even came to mind as I was playing. There were parts that were clear as day and others that I really had to work hard at to hear anything, but the throughout the writing process I knew that I wanted to communicate: the notion of struggling with a fear of change.
Side Order is quite unambiguously a journey into virtual reality to confront and defeat the manifestation of Marina's fear of change, and I wanted to capture what I thought her feelings about that might be. (Lil bit of headcanon coming up here :p). In the first half of the second chorus, I reused lyrics from my original Ebb & Flow lyric video, where the theme was Marina's struggle with and eventual overcoming of alcoholism. Their use here is as a reaffirmation of her sobriety, fitting in as a brick in a wall of secure creativity that sweeps forward to topple fear and stagnation.
